Besides, the obvious lack of security for women, the horrible rape and murders also point towards the reaction of government headed for rapists since a long time.
In the case of a BPO employee that was gang raped by 5 persons in 2010 at Dhaula Kuan, the Delhi Court finally declared the judgement on 14th October 2014 that all 5 accused have been convicted for raping BPO executive.
"All the accused in the case have been convicted, the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on October 17," said lawyer Abdul Salam. How ironical is this that the court is still saying that punishment will be pronounced on October 17th.. Do our courts need 4 years to execute judgement for rapists?
After this case Delhi Police issued an order under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code to all BPOs in Delhi NCR to drop women employees’ home safely and provide them security. But the point is that why it is so that our government wakes up only after a horrible event takes place? I mean why didn’t the government think of the security of girls before this shameless act had taken place?
Now can I ask Delhi Police a few questions - Will they take the guarantee of the drivers who drive the cab and the guards allotted to every BPO will not harm women? Will they be able to protect them from such problems? Harender Chaudhary, head of the security company Ironman Securitas rightly says, “I wonder if the security guards allotted for protection even undergo any training for women’s security.”
"We have a woman president; we've had a woman prime minister. Yet in 2012, one of the greatest tragedies in our country is that women are on their own when it comes to their own safety," said a female newsreader of NDTV.
The case of Nirbhaya had jolted the whole country and media supported her case the fullest. This case went viral by the help of media and then court started a quick action on that but what about the cases that were not much hyped by the media? Are they not women who suffered? If courts can fast-track Nibhaya’s case, then why can’t other cases be solved as quickly?
I personally feel that if government of India makes strict rules and takes quicker decisions against rapists then a fear will develop in criminal minds and they might think twice before doing this shameless act. Rather than giving muawza (compensation) to their families or supporting financially, those rape victims need emotional support and sooner & fair judgement for the culprits.
