The Indian PM Narendra Modi was gracefully welcomed by Indian-Americans from across the nation. They all gave a ‘Rock star’ treatment to our Prime Minister at the prestigious Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple.
At Madison Square there was nearly 20,000 strong gathering of Indian Diaspora which welcomed Modi.
There was huge echo of slogans like ‘Narendra Modi zindabad’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Welcome Modi’ in the Madison Square. People were seen waiting in long queues just for a glance of Modi. Approx 20,000 people choked the Madison Square Garden for the largest event of its kind for the Indian-American community intended by the freshly created Indian-American Community Foundation (IACF), and supported by more than 400 Indian-American organizers from across the country.
Lots of people were dressed in the Modi T-shirt with a sketch of Modi on it. Many were holding banners and slogans like ‘America loves Modi’.
College going girl Deepa Kaur stated “He is a Rock Star, we have a lot of expectations from him”.
There were a number of cultural events like popular songs, folk dances that were lined up. It had some never-seen-before sights, people were dancing to the tunes of these cultural performances. More than 200 media persons, a lot from India, had registered for the event.
“He is the first Prime Minister who is connected to the NRI”, Organizers said, which is unique for an Indian-American event.
“That’s why you see such a large number of people. We filled up the seats in just two weeks. It has never happened in the history of the Madison Square Garden that seats gets filled up some three weeks before the event”, said by Anil Sharma, one of the volunteers of the event.
The event involved around three dozen of congressmen including several power full lawmakers like Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, and Congressman Anil Bera amoung many others.
In actuality, more than 2,000 volunteers worked day and night for the past three weeks to craft the program a success.
“It’s Modi Mania, it’s a life time event”, said Ankit Patel
Modi’s fans were holding the Indian flag and wore traditional Indian garb with several groups of performers hauling drums and ‘dhols’ to give him a stimulating welcome.
At several locations strict security arrangements were there with police barricades.
Anti-Modi protester said “We have gathered outside Madison Square Garden to remind the people of what happened in 2002(Gujarat riots) under Modi’s governance.
Additional arrangements were made for live telecast of the speech of Narendra Modi and other events that included nearly two-hour-long entertainment program.
