"Jaisa desh, waisa besh" is now become a major problem for the girls of government college in sec 14, Gurgaon. The above quoted statement is said by the college Principal Usha Malik, who believes that Indian attire is compulsory for maintaining decency in the college. According to her wearing of capris and sleeveless top is the violation of decency in the college.
Vandana, sister of one of the students enrolled in that college said "A security guard didn't allow my sister to step into the college as she was wearing capris. When my mother and I met the principal, she said that to look decent, girls should wear Indian dress”.
A girl who was once a leading soccer player in her school, now a first year student of this college doesn’t feel comfortable in playing soccer as now she finds
it tough to follow her passion. This college does not permit her to wear knee length shorts to the gymnasium for workouts that are integral to a soccer player's fitness. "Forget shorts, we're not even allowed to wear sleeveless tops and capris. It's difficult for a sportsperson to train in salwar kameez, or for that matter trousers," says the soccer passionate student.
Many students of this college are frustrated by the principal's diktat on dress code.
Principal Usha Malik added that she "personally felt dress should be in accordance to one's culture". "We have never instructed students to follow an Indian dress code. We only want them to maintain decency on campus. There have been instances when girls were teased outside the campus."
Our opinion:
According to the above byte of Usha Malik it seems that she want girls to be safe outside the campus as they were teased maybe because of their clothes. So in that case she can least allow girls to change the clothes inside the campus before any sport practice.
I would like to draw attention of Mrs. Malik to our national players like Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and Saniya Mirza who play for India in clothes as appropriate, including shorts and skirts. My question to Usha Malik is do these girls who play or represent India at international levels not maintain the decorum or decency of India?
I think they maintain decency and do proud to India by their performance and nationalistic feeling in their heart. You cannot judge a person by his / her clothes. Moreover, it is not written in any book that one has to be fully clad to maintain decency.
However, if she is still flatly restricting students from wearing western outfits then she has to make sure that it does not affect the participation of girls in sports activities.
